1980-1981: Completed one-year study in Quaternary geology, University of Iceland, Reykjavík.
1982-1987: Doctoral studies at the Department of Quaternary Geology, Lund University
1987: I defended my thesis for Ph.D. (Fil. dr.) in Quaternary geology on the 9th of October 1987. Faculty opponent was Professor Jan Mangerud, University of Bergen, Norway.

Starfsferill

Academic career
1988-1994: Post-doctoral research position ("Forskarassistent") with the Swedish Natural Sciences Research Council (NFR), positioned at the Department of Quaternary Geology, Lund University. Research on the Late Quaternary glacial history of the polar regions and Iceland.
1992: Appointed docent (associate professor) in Quaternary geology at the Department of Quaternary Geology, Lund University.
1994-1999: Senior research scientist (associate professor) in glacial and Quaternary geology at Earth Sciences Centre, Göteborg University. The position was financed by the Swedish Natural Sciences Research Counsel as an effort to consolidate research in the glacial history of the polar regions.
2000-2003: Professor of Quaternary geology at Earth Sciences Centre, Göteborg University (on leave from 2000-08-30 for working at UNIS; did, however, supervise PhD students at GU)
2000-2003: Professor of Quaternary and glacial geology at UNIS, Norway (a three-year contract)
2001-2003: Professor of Quaternary and glacial geology, University of Iceland, part-time (20-50%).
2003-2004: Adjunct professor (20%) of Quaternary and glacial geology, UNIS.
Since 15th of August 2003-: Professor of Quaternary and glacial geology, University of Iceland, full-time.
Since 1st of January 2007-: Adjunct professor (20%) of Quaternary and glacial geology, UNIS.
